Profile Suggestions

Tim Morea

Vice President
BA, RateBeer, Homebrewtalk, Brewtoad, & Untappd usernames (any other beer sites/forums?)
Other profile fields like we have on the Ning right now.

Is it possible to make an alias for the username? Specifically, right now, my username is bytemyfoot. Can I make it show Tim Morea when I post and stuff, but keep my login bytemyfoot?

It's not possible (without a mod) to have a different username/login name. That's actually pretty standard on most forums. I think we should adopt a "real name" policy so that we know who is who (and I like Brian's suggestion of a "real picture" too to help people know who is who. There isn't a mod that I've found, yet, that works with this version of phpbb (3.1.2, the newest version.)

I think we can add additional profile fields but I wouldn't worry too much about them. I don't think most people use them or keep them updated (or check other's) but we can add some in there, I think. When creating an account via Facebook you don't even see a profile page unless you go in to edit your profile manually. Will really depend on how people will create accounts most of the time.

I can't even find where to modify the profile fields that the system has now. According to the backend, it should at least ask for a location and a website but I can't find where those are to edit them.

I wonder if that's a bug with the Facebook login, or if it's something else. Can you edit your website now? And if so, what do you click to do that?

Found it! There was a setting and my user couldn't update my own profile. Fixed now. Will look into adding the additional profile fields.

Username is still an issue, I don't think we can display a different name than what your login name is.

Added some additional profile fields. Think I got most of them linked to profiles, but RateBeer and BrewToad link via ID and not username so there isn't an easy way to link them.

Does BeerSmith have a forum/user? If so can you show me your "profile" page and I'll see if I can get a link working.

We have Facebook and Twitter links, are there other social media that anyone uses? I turned off G+ because I (even as a tech guy) don't know anyone that uses it, but I can turn it back on if anyone request.

Yes, I made it 50kb. Not really sure what a reasonable size for avatar uploads is. The lower it is the faster the forum loads. But the higher it is, the more likely people will be able to upload pictures without modifying them. Apparently 6 is the default (which is WAY to small) but I don't know if 50 is going to be enough or not. Let's see!

I also increased the maximum dimension to 120x120 to make it a little easier too.

As someone who has a lot of trouble remembering names I still strongly support both of these. :D

I suppose there are some privacy concerns since we plan on making at least certain sections publicly viewable (we had one member from the very beginning who refused to sign up for the Ning forum because of the real name requirement; he had never used his real name online anywhere and wasn't about to start just for us) but IMO the easiest solution to that -- if there is any significant concern -- is to just make the forum private. A discussion to have later, if there are any objections to the real name / real avatar policy.

Looks like there might be a broken link in the Profile tab on the control panel.

Fixed.

It was bad data associated with a bad extension that I was hoping to use so people could login with Facebook instead of creating an account. But it didn't work, had to go clean up the data.

Just so everyone knows, once you have an account, you CAN link that account to your facebook login and then login with just your facebook login via OAUTH, if you wanted. That's built into the core phpbb now, so it should work well and it does for me.
